Area rugs are a great way to switch up the look of any room. With so many made in various patterns, colors, and textures, it’s easy to find one that fits the look of your home. However, because every area rug is different, they also require specialized cleaning and care to maintain their quality for years to come.
At Chem-Dry of Northern Nevada, we specialize in area rug cleaning as part of our professional cleaning services. Since 1997 we’ve gained valuable knowledge on tips and tricks anyone can use to maintain and boost the appearance of area rugs for years to come. This month’s blog will help you maintain a drier, cleaner, and healthier environment in your home starting with your area rugs.
Routine Rug Cleaning
A majority of area rugs should receive the following basic routine cleaning. As always, be sure to inspect instructions found on rug tags for proper maintenance and to avoid costly mistakes.
Vacuum area rugs often. Remove dirt and particles from your rugs by vacuuming them regularly. Depending on usage, especially if they’re high-traffic rugs, aim to vacuum at least several times a week. Avoid vacuuming fringe on the edges and turn down your vacuum settings appropriately for shag rugs.
Gently remove pet hair with a brush. Vacuuming may not be enough to remove pet hair from area rugs. Use a stiff brush to remove the pet hair about once each week.
Rotate rugs several times throughout the year. It’s always good to have a back-up, especially with high-traffic rugs. Foot traffic can wear rugs down quickly, but rotating your rugs can help. Turn your rugs multiple times each year so they wear evenly. A good idea would be to switch them around every season.
Shake rugs frequently. Area rugs quickly accumulate dirt, dust, and other particles, especially when placed by an exit. Regularly shaking out rugs can prevent more dirt and dust from being spread out into your home. Shake them outdoors if possible.
Rug Deep Cleaning
Again, start by checking the labels on your rugs to see if there are special care instructions for your particular material. Some rugs may only be dry cleaned or spot cleaned.
If your rugs are small and machine washable, place them in a mesh bag then wash them in a delicate/cold water setting with liquid detergent and hang to dry. Avoid machine drying area rugs as this can cause shrinkage and keep rugs out of direct sunlight to avoid fading.
Area Rug Stain Removal
Whenever a spill occurs on the area rug, never attempt to scrub away the stain. While it may seem like the right thing to do, this will cause the stain to penetrate deeper into rug fibers and make it more difficult to extract later on. Instead, gradually blot the stain as soon as possible once the accident has occurred. This will give you more of a fighting chance to remove the stain completely.
Try using a cleaning solution of 1 tablespoon dishwashing detergent and 1 tablespoon white vinegar in 1 quart of warm water. You can also try a store-bought stainer removing spray. Always be sure to test out the stain-removing spray on a small section of the rug to avoid potential discoloration and damage.
