Ever have your favorite candle get knocked off the table and onto the carpet, spilling wax everywhere? First thing first, don’t panic. There are simple steps that you can follow to safely and effectively remove the wax from your carpets. For any other damaging carpet stains, be sure to always give the carpet stain removal pros in Reno at Chem-Dry of Northern Nevada a call. If we can’t get the stain out, no one can.

Step 1: Collect your Materials

Get your shopping list together to ensure that you can get the job done properly. Having these items on hand will ensure that you can be prepared to tackle this issue at a moment’s notice. This includes:

  • a bag of ice
  • a towel
  • a butter knife
  • an iron
  • a brown paper bag
  • carpet cleaner
  • a second towel
  • a vacuum

Now that you have your supplies, we can get started.

Step 2: Freeze the Wax

Instead of cleaning up the hot wax from the carpet immediately, we suggest that you begin to freeze the wax. This will prevent the wax from further melting into the carpet and damaging it. You will also be able to remove the wax in greater portions.

To freeze the wax, get your bag of ice and place it over the spilled wax. Ensure that it is covered completely so that all of the wax gets frozen for efficient removal. Wait for a few minutes until the wax is as cold as possible. To prevent your carpet from receiving extra moisture, feel free to use your towel underneath the bag of ice.

Step 3: Scrape the Wax

By now, the wax should have had enough time to freeze and be ready for removal. Take your butter knife to lift the wax and separate it from the carpet gently. Take your time to remove as much of the wax as possible in this step to reduce the chances of remaining wax later significantly. Once you feel that you have removed as much of the wax as possible, you can then move onto the next step.

Step 4: Heat the Wax to Remove

Now that you have removed a significant amount of the wax, it is time to reheat the wax’s small remnants still stuck in your carpet. Wait… Reheat the wax? Yes, this will allow you to come one step closer to removing the wax for good from your home’s carpet. Take your iron and set it to a low temperature; you don’t want to burn anything, especially the carpet that you’re trying to restore. We’ve found it best to avoid applying a steam setting as well.

Grab the brown paper bag and place it over the remaining wax stuck in your carpet. Gently rub the iron over the paper bag. Amazingly, the wax will melt, and rather than remaining stuck in your carpet; it will stick to the paper bag. At this point, there will be very few remnants still on your carpet. You’re getting closer!

Step 5: Clean the Carpet

By now, you should notice that the wax is practically removed from the carpet. There will still be a slight mess, however. Now is the time to bring out your carpet cleaning products and another towel you can use to blot the stain. Continue the blotting process until the stain is removed from the carpet.

Step 6: Vacuum the Carpet

Once you have finished cleaning the carpet with your products, wait for the carpet to dry to pick up additional remnants. Finally, vacuum over the carpet to remove additional wax that already hasn’t been removed.
